HepatWell --To Help promte Liver's Health

Liver, the largest organ in the body, has many functions. Some of the functions are: to produce substances that break down fats, convert glucose to glycogen, produce urea (the main substance of urine), make certain amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), filter harmful substances from the blood (such as alcohol), storage of vitamins and minerals (vitamins A, D, K and B12) and maintain a proper level or glucose in the blood. The liver is also responsible for producing cholesterol. It produces about 80% of the cholesterol in our body.

It removes or neutralizes poisons from the blood, produces immune agents to control infection, and removes germs and bacteria from the blood. It makes proteins that regulate blood clotting and produces bile to help absorb fat and fat-soluble vitamins. But, it is also constantly attacked by theses elements. When theses assaults are overwhelming, the liver takes the toll. Incorrect diet, excessive alcohol intake, adverse reactions to drugs and toxic chemicals, and viral hepatitis, all add up the stress to our liver. Cirrhosis, hepatitis and blocked bile duct are few of the diseases results from these attacks and sometimes they also lead to liver cancer. To take good care of your liver and maintain the health of it is essential to the well being of your life. HepatWell is specially formulated to detoxify and maintain the health of the liver with Milk Thistle, Alpha Liopoic Acid, Schisandra, Astragalus, Ginseng, Ginkgo Biloba, and Selenium.

  • Milk Thistle

Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) is a plant from the aster family. It is highly effective as an antioxidant herb, particularly with its ability to protect the liver from free radical damage. Milk thistle contains bioflavonoids and a group of compounds that are made from bioflavonoids, collectively known as silymarin. Silymarin is at least ten times more potent as an antioxidant than Vitamin E. It has been shown to be useful in cases of hepatitis, viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice, and fatty degeneration of the liver. Milk thistle has been used in Europe as a treatment for liver disease and jaundice since the 16th century. Silymarin functions in three ways. First, it protects the outer membrane of liver cells, because the silymarin molecules form a type of blockade that prevents the entrance of many harmful chemicals. Second, it increases the liver's content of a substance called glutathione which is responsible for detoxifying many chemicals, drugs and hormones. Third, silymarin also stimulates the growth of new liver cells so that damaged areas of the liver may be regenerated. Silymarin ingestion is also linked to gallstone prevention. Milk Thistle affects primarily the liver, spleen, and kidneys. It increases production of protein by the liver and stimulates regeneration of liver tissue. It is claimed to protect the liver from toxic substances and from certain drugs. Even the poisons most dangerous to the liver, those contained in the Deathcap mushroom, can be effectively detoxified with Milk Thistle extract.

  • Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha-Lipoic acid is often referred to as the metabolic antioxidant. It really has two functions in the human body. First, it plays a role in the metabolism of the food that we eat to convert it into energy. The second role, and this is more recently discovered, is that of an antioxidant where it prevents oxidative damage to body components. As an antioxidant, alpha-lipoic acid shields the liver from potentially harmful cell changes and assists it in flushing toxins from the body. This makes it useful in treating such liver disorders as chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis. Alpha-lipoic acid supplements have also proved effective in minimizing liver toxicity following exposure to poisons such as heavy metals (including lead) and toxic industrial chemicals such as carbon tetrachloride.

Lipoic acid has also been used for decades to protect the liver and to detoxify the body of heavy metal pollutants, such as excessive iron and copper and toxic metals such as cadmium, lead and mercury," (Richard A. Passwater, Ph.D., in Lipoic Acid: The Metabolic Antioxidant)

  • Schisandra

It's known to have liver-protective (antihepatotoxic) action and to regenerate damaged liver tissue. In Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) fruit contains at least 30 different lignans. Lignans are addition, lignans interfere with a compound called platelet activating factor, which promotes inflammation. Schisandra increases liver function, which helps the body become more efficient at producing energy. In China, schisandra, is widely used for progressive hepatic degeneration due to viral hepatitis or chemical challenge-indications for which schisandra is well documented. In 1986, Chinese researchers reported more than 5,000 cases of various types of hepatitis have been treated with schisandra preparations, resulting in the reduction of elevated liver enzymes.7 According to researchers, elevated SGPT values returned to normal in 75 percent of patients treated after 20 days of taking an unspecified schisandra preparation.

  • Astragalus

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceous) enhances immune function by increasing the activity of various white blood cells and boosting the production of antibodies and natural interferon, which can aids in the healing of hepatitis. It helps protect, nourish and restore the liver.

  • Ginseng

Asian Ginseng (Panax ginseng) contains ginseng saponin. It was found that ginseng saponin stimulated protein biosynthesis and liver cell regeneration, thus preventing transition of acute hepatitis to chronic hepatitis.

Furthermore, ginseng saponin increases enzyme activity involved in ethanol and acetaldehyde degradation, which in turn mitigate deleterious effect of ethanol and prevent the liver from attaining alcohol toxicity.

  • Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba was shown to be effective in arresting the development of liver fibrosis associated with chronic hepatitis B.

  • Selenium

Selenium is an essential trace mineral in the human body. This nutrient is an important part of antioxidant enzymes that protect cells against the effects of free radicals that are produced during normal oxygen metabolism. The body has developed defenses such as antioxidants to control levels of free radicals because they can damage cells and contribute to the development of some chronic diseases. Selenium is also essential for normal functioning of the immune system and thyroid gland. Anti-fibrosis herbs and selenium have beneficial effects on hepatic fibrosis in rats. (He YT, Liu DW, Ding LY, Li Q, Xiao YH. Department of Epidemiology, Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang 050017, Hebei Province, China. World J Gastroenterol. 2004 Mar 1;10(5):703-6. )

  • Dr. Burt Berkson at the Integrative Center of New Mexico, New Mexico State University recently published a report detailing a treatment program he used to successfully treat three patients destined for liver transplant surgery. All three patients were suffering from cirrhosis of the liver, portal hypertension, and esophageal varices (easily ruptured varicose veins in the esophagus) secondary to chronic hepatitis C infections. Since interferon and anti-viral medications are successful in only about 30% of cases, Dr. Berkson decided to try a triple antioxidant therapy using high doses of alpha lipoic acid, selenium, and silymarin (milk thistle extract). These natural remedies have been proven to both protect against free radical damage and viral proliferation. He reports that all responded positively to the treatment within a short period of time and none required transplant surgery. All feel fine and returned to work without any problems.
